Sam Ross answered the call,
He was proud to serve his country.
He sought an education, a career,
And a life in the U. S. Military.
Sam was with the 82nd Airborne Divisions-
307th Engineering Battalion on the 18th of May.
His job as a combat engineer was
To remove mines, explosives and other obstacles
Impeding U S Infantry on their way.
Sam Ross was 20 years old.
He was removing a mine
Where children played.
Since that day he's had 14 surgeries,
He lost a leg... he is blind.
Now he's home and thankful
That his life didn't end.
Life as he knew it might be gone
But with God's help he'll begin again.
Salvatore "Sam" Ross faced the flag.
He heard the call and volunteered to go.
And like so many young men you never hear about
He's one of America's new unsung heroes

Hero
There's a hero,
